Closing the Pathology Gap to Save Lives and Strengthen Health Systems

Southern Africa faces an urgent shortage of pathologists. PathDx bridges this gap through digital pathology and AI-powered solutions, enabling scalability and efficiency in a region ripe for healthcare expansion.

The Problem: The Global Pathologist Shortage:
A Crisis in the Making

We combine expert-led diagnostics with scalable, innovative technologies to improve patient outcomes across the region.

Southern Africa faces a severe shortage of pathologists — with fewer than 1 per million people, compared to 60 per million in high-income countries. In Botswana, fewer than 15 anatomical pathologists serve a population of over 2.5 million.

Globally, pathologists represent just 0.8% of all doctors. Africa holds only 2% of the global pathology workforce, despite carrying a disproportionate disease burden. The disparity in diagnostic capacity between Africa and high-income regions spans a 400-year gap in development.

To make matters worse:

  • Only ~80 new pathologists qualify annually across the entire continent
  • 80% of diagnostics remain concentrated in major cities
  • Africa’s population is expected to double by 2050

The Consequence: The Devastating Cost of Diagnostic Errors & Delays Lives Lost. Trust Broken. Revenue and Productivity at Risk.

This shortage leads to dangerous delays — especially in cancer care, where patients often wait weeks to months for pathology results.

Global data reveals the impact:

  • $100B+ lost annually to diagnostic errors
  • $7 trillion in productivity losses by 2030 from undiagnosed NCDs
  • 50% of NCDs go undiagnosed
  • 60% of cancers in LMICs are diagnosed too late — yet early detection can reduce deaths by 25%
  • Over 50% of the global population lacks access to essential diagnostics

The Cost of Inaction: The Rising Financial Catastrophe of Avoidable Hospital Admissions – A Drain Healthcare Cannot Sustain

Inadequate diagnostics lead to avoidable hospital admissions, straining already stretched health systems.

  • €250 million/year is lost in Portugal due to unnecessary admissions
  • Globally, 10–30% of hospital admissions are preventable

The PathDx Solution: Scalable, Decentralised, Digitally Enabled

PathDx bridges the gap by delivering:

  • Digital pathology with AI-powered analysis
  • Subspecialist reporting
  • Turnaround times under 72 hours for urgent cases

By decentralising access and centralising diagnostic expertise, PathDx ensures accurate, timely diagnostics are within reach for hospitals, clinics, and patients across the region.

Why It Matters

PathDx is more than a lab. It’s a platform to:

  • Reduce preventable deaths
  • Improve early cancer detection
  • Prevent unnecessary hospital admissions
  • Future-proof Africa’s diagnostic infrastructure

The time to invest in diagnostic equity is now — and PathDx is ready.
